Fully also has one of the most beautiful chestnut groves in Europe. The first chestnut trees in Fully were planted around the year 1200 AD. At one time, it is said, the forest would have exceeded 50 hectares. Before the cleansing of the Rhône plain, this food tree was considered essential for the survival of local populations. Each family owned a few trees which were carefully maintained by pruning and grafting.
Gradually, the vine became much more profitable, replaced the chestnut trees. Several selves have remained until today, as above the villages of Branson and La Fontaine. The largest forest, that located above the main village of Vers-l'Eglise, now has more than 1,000 trees and covers almost 17 hectares.
Since its protection, the chestnut forest has been the subject of special care. Open to everyone, it has become a place for walking and relaxing. In October, the chestnut harvest is open to the public. The only prohibition, that of "gauler", that is to strike or shake the branches of the trees: only chestnuts already on the ground can be picked up. Free, picking is obviously reserved for private consumption.
The chestnut grove of Fully belongs to the Bourgeoisie, it is public. A place of relaxation appreciated by villagers and visitors in general, it houses an educational trail, a Vita course, a Finnish track but also the Châtaigneraie Cover.
